CAN - 32 matchs à un milliard : Pape Alé Niang engage un combat contre la CAF
Pape Alé Niang and his colleagues have launched a battle against the Confederation of African Football (CAF) regarding the broadcasting rights for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The Director General of RTS wants to broadcast all 52 matches of the competition, not just 32, for a sum exceeding one billion CFA francs. This amount would be covered by the state, as RTS lacks the necessary funds.
During a panel discussion last Wednesday at the Press House during the International Media Fair, he used the platform to denounce the CAF's behavior and announce an initiative undertaken with other television directors in Africa. "The Africa Cup of Nations is an African competition, a celebration of the continent. However, due to its lobbying efforts, Canal+ has 52 matches while public broadcasters only have 32. They want to force the public to buy the Canal+ package to get all the matches," he lamented.
The other injustice was that these 32 matches were only valid in Francophone Africa, while Anglophone countries had the entire competition. Thus, along with other countries, Senegal took the lead in putting an end to this. "We sent a letter to CAF," revealed Pape Alé Niang.
However, things don't seem to be going as planned, at least not so far. Instead of allocating 52 matches to French-speaking countries, CAF wants to lower the bar by allocating only 32 matches to English-speaking countries. It's worth noting that Canal+ recently (September-October) acquired MultiChoice, the South African package that was its rival in English-speaking countries. The battle against CAF and Canal+ will therefore be no easy task.
Furthermore, Mamadou Baal, the former Director of Television and moderator of the aforementioned panel, revealed that while broadcasting rights amount to over one billion for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), they are only 300 million for the World Cup. Baal suggested that all African television stations boycott the AFCON, especially since they are the only ones broadcasting the competition. "No other television station broadcasts the AFCON except for African stations. We must boycott to force CAF to see reason."
The former director recalls that to broadcast the Africa Cup of Nations, they only had to agree to 10 or 15 minutes of advertising, and that was enough to cover the broadcasting rights. It was only when CAF sold them to a private company that everything became expensive.
The panel in question focused on the content of African television and the narrative surrounding Africa. This raises the issue of collaboration between television stations in the face of limited resources, but also the need to work with producers and content creators to tell the story of another Africa, one that is absent from Western media.
