Convocation du journaliste Mamadou Fofana : la RADDHO alerte sur la liberté de la presse
The African Meeting for the Defense of Human Rights (RADDHO) announced it is closely monitoring the summons of journalist Mamadou Fofana of Sen TV, scheduled for this Thursday at 10:00 AM. This summons follows a complaint filed by political figure Aïda Mbodj after the journalist wrongly attributed statements made by another woman. Mr. Fofana has publicly acknowledged this error.
In a statement signed by its Secretary General, Mouhamadou Seck, RADDHO recalls that freedom of the press and the protection of journalists in the exercise of their mission constitute essential principles in any state governed by the rule of law.
The organization, with the support of Lawyers Without Borders (ASF), is providing legal assistance in this case. It recommends that journalists demonstrate responsibility and rigor in their reporting. It also urges Ms. Mbodj to "rise above the law" and drop the charges, arguing that these repeated legal proceedings undermine press freedom.
RADDHO calls for the removal of defamation cases and opinion offenses from the judicial system, in order to favour non-repressive mechanisms.
