Liberté de la presse : chute de 48e à 98e place, la CJRS réagit
Faced with a worrying decline in press freedom, with Senegal falling from 48th to 94th place in Reporters Without Borders' World Press Freedom Index, the Convention of Young Reporters of Senegal (CJRS) launched a three-day training program on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, for 14 journalists from across the country. The goal is to strengthen their editorial responsibility and safety, while enabling them to gather and process reliable information on press freedom violations.
President Mamadou Diagne urged his colleagues to act responsibly in exercising press freedom, particularly on television sets, in order to avoid any legal risk.
"What we are seeing is that there are more and more people on set who say things and then are summoned to the police or the gendarmerie. And then we are criticized for not attending to this or that person. There is an aspect of responsibility that must be taken into account," he stressed.
Editorial responsibility at the heart of training
For Mamadou Diagne, editorial responsibility is essential, especially in television broadcasts. According to him, some journalists appear on air for political or economic reasons, and make accusations without proof, before seeking the support of the CJRS (Court of Justice and the Republic).
"Editorial responsibility means not saying certain things that could lead to legal action against the author," he reminded.
RSF supports the training and protection of journalists
Ndèye Diary Ba, the project manager for Reporters Without Borders (RSF) in sub-Saharan Africa, explained that this initiative is part of a three-year project, supported by German cooperation. This project has three components. The first aims to strengthen and effectively protect journalists in Senegal.
According to her, a network of focal points will be set up in all regions to collect data on attacks and violations of press freedom, thus enabling RSF to act quickly and effectively.
The second component concerns advocacy. Thanks to the information collected by the focal points, RSF will be able to produce a national report on the state of press freedom and meet with local authorities to defend the rights of journalists.
Finally, the third component of the project aims to strengthen journalists' capacities in terms of physical and digital security. Regional trainers will be trained to raise awareness among their peers about these essential issues for carrying out their work safely.
