Liberté de presse : Le président des jeunes reporters fustige les dérives sur les plateaux télé
At the opening of a three-day training session on data collection related to press freedom violations, the president of the Convention of Young Reporters of Senegal (CJRS), Mamadou Diagne, delivered a firm speech. Addressing an audience of fourteen journalists from across the country, he urged his colleagues, particularly television presenters, to practice their profession with greater rigor to avoid breaking the law.
Mamadou Diagne highlighted a worrying trend where freedom of expression seems to be dispensing with basic rules of evidence. "What we're seeing is that there are more and more people on television who say things and then are summoned to the police or gendarmerie." He emphasized that these situations put the organization in a difficult position: "And then we're criticized for not supporting this or that person. There's a responsibility aspect that needs to be taken into account."
The president of the CJRS was particularly incisive regarding the motivations of certain participants. According to him, some journalists appear on television "for political or economic reasons" and do not hesitate to attack individuals without any basis. He firmly reiterated that "editorial responsibility" implies, above all, "not saying certain things" that could lead to legal action.
