[Media'Tek] Moustapha Diop : entre fidélité à Sidy Lamine Niasse et étiquette “Pro Pastef”
Since taking over as head of Walf TV and Walf FM, veteran journalist Moustapha Diop has aroused both admiration and controversy. Praised for his commitment by his supporters, he is accused by his detractors of aligning the Walfadjri group with the positions of PASTEF, the ruling party. Undaunted by criticism, he maintains an uncompromising editorial line, faithful to the legacy of Sidy Lamine Niasse.
Journalist accused of closeness to the government
Dubbed a "pro-PASTEF journalist" by his opponents, Moustapha Diop rejects this label. His critics accuse him of primarily targeting the former regime and its allies, far from Walf's image as "the voice of the voiceless." "I will not defend those who led the country into this situation," he retorts, refusing to allow his columnists to serve as a facade of opposition. This stance is illustrated by the appointment of Mame Birame Wathie, a former Walf employee, as chairman of the board of directors of the daily newspaper *Le Soleil* in May 2025.
On his shows and on YouTube, Diop adopts an incisive tone, prioritizing information over seduction. "Journalism is about deciding, not pleasing," he asserts. While his supporters praise his independence, his detractors, such as the imprisoned columnist Abdou Nguer, accused him in January 2025 of being a "PASTEF sympathizer."
The legacy of Sidy Lamine Niasse
Originally from Louga, Moustapha Diop started at the newspaper *Le Populaire* as an intern, before becoming head of the political and economic desks. A graduate of ISSIC and trained at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at UCAD, he joined Walfadjri under the leadership of Sidy Lamine Niasse. "Sidy was a visionary. He taught me that editorial independence is a daily struggle," he confides, pointing to the portrait of the founder that sits in his office. "With him, we wrote what was needed, not what was liked."
Significant events
Two moments shaped his career. The sinking of the *Joola* on September 26, 2002, remains an "open wound." "I saw the country cry, families devastated. This tragedy taught me that journalism is about carrying the memory of the victims and demanding accountability," he says, denouncing "a failure of the State."
The Sweet Beauty affair, pitting Ousmane Sonko against Adji Sarr, also left its mark on Diop. "This case divided Senegal and revealed the flaws in the legal system. We had to remain factual and cautious, while giving everyone a voice," he explains, his fists on the table. He dreams of writing a book about this affair, where "the truth was the first victim."
An uncompromising vision
Moustapha Diop defends a free and rigorous press. "Freedom of the press is the guarantee of all freedoms," he asserts, aware of the political pressures on the media. Sober in his demeanor, serious but capable of perspective, he embodies a journalism committed to "truth, rigor, and integrity." A family man, he continues on his path, indifferent to media storms, convinced that compromise is more dangerous than controversy.

Cela me rappelle mon texte de 2012. Rien n'a jamais. Seulement, il reste beaucoup de sénégalais qui n'ont pas encore compris la presse.
Si en plus on est convaincu que le nouveau pouvoir est sur de bons rails, c'est un devoir de l'aider d'une façon ou d'une autre; avec pour seule boussole l'intérêt du peuple.
