« J’ai envie de lui couper les couilles… » : Quand Jesse Jackson pestait contre Barack Obama
A leading figure in the fight for civil rights in the United States, the African American pastor Jesse Jackson died this Tuesday, February 17, in Chicago at the age of 84. Throughout his life, he was deeply committed to the emancipation of Black people in segregated America, even after the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
There was very little that could be criticized in terms of his activism, but he did make statements that offended more than one person, notably his harsh comments about Barack Obama in 2008.
"Barack speaks condescendingly to Black people..."
At the time, the young senator from Illinois had just received the Democratic nomination.
Jesse Jackson, a guest on a Fox News show, said off the record that he did not approve of the way the Honolulu native spoke to the black electorate.
“Barack, he speaks condescendingly to Black people…about these subsidies to faith-based organizations…I want to cut his balls off: Barack is doing Black people a disservice,” the Reverend blurted out, thinking the microphone was off. His words reached every American home.
Jesse Jackson later apologized, retracted his statements, and declared that Obama was America's hope, but the damage was already done. At the time, his son, Jesse Jr., was even co-chair of Barack Obama's presidential campaign.
