[Le Match] Viviane Chidid vs Mia Guissé : qui est la reine de la scène musicale sénégalaise ?
For its new concept entitled the Match, Seneweb confronts the leading figures of the political, sports, cultural scene…, as far as the Senegalese music industry is concerned, this time the objective is to scrutinize two Senegalese music stars. One is experiencing a meteoric rise and the other still shines despite the demands and codes of the new generation. Singers Mia Guissé and Viviane Chidid, although different in their musical styles, their registers, crystallize the attention on the Senegalese music scene. On music platforms, they easily count millions of plays in record time. A fact that stimulates fans who do not fail to put them in competition and each one goes for his artist. To this end, to decide, Seneweb gathered the opinions of experts such as the lyricist and cultural consultant Guissé Pène, the artist and producer Michael Soumah, the singer-songwriter, El Maestro le Kangham and the cultural journalist Alioune Badara Mané.
Guisse Pène: “It would be heresy to place Viviane and Mia Guissé in the same context…”
According to lyricist and cultural consultant, Guissé Pène, Viviane and Mia Guissé have both certainly convinced and are well established in the Senegalese musical landscape, however given their registers, "it would be heresy to place them in the same context. Viviane Chidid is today one of the leading artists who have performed on major stages, crowned with several international awards and distinctions, which is not yet the case for Mia who has just arrived on the scene but we must recognize her qualities and talents to predict a bright future for her."
"Viviane embodies tradition reinventing itself. Mia is the freshness of a generation asserting itself."
According to the cultural consultant, Viviane Chidid and Mia Guissé embody two generations and two very distinct styles of the Senegalese music scene. "Viviane embodies tradition reinventing itself. Mia is the freshness of a generation asserting itself," he notes. Two women, two styles, but the same passion to thrill Senegal and beyond. The trendy music of Mia Guissé and Amadeus is a global and connected aesthetic. For cultural journalist Alioune Badara Mané, Viviane and Mia Guissé are both at the top of their game with works praised by young people and women. "On the other hand, Viviane Chidid notes significant technical progress with stage performances that are formal. Her personal distinctions once again prove her inescapable presence on the scene. Unlike Mia Guissé, who, despite her beautiful works, has not yet released a solo album to the general public, and her live performances are moderately appreciated."
El Maestro le Kangham: Mia seems to have a head start in terms of...
According to composer El Maestro le Kangham, “Viviane Chidid and Mia Guissé are both major female figures in Senegalese music today. However, Mia seems to have a head start in terms of dominance, particularly thanks to the impressive numbers she records, with millions of views on her videos. Her main asset lies in the fact that the Senegalese population is predominantly young. Being from this same generation herself, she naturally manages to seduce and unite the general public. This partly explains why she dominates the female music scene today.”
Michael Soumah: “Viviane is a seasoned artist”
Viviane is an accomplished singer. She has a career spanning more than thirty years, so she has more musical experience. She has performed on the biggest stages around the world, collaborating with big names in Senegalese, African, and international music... and I think she is a seasoned artist. Mia Guissé is part of this new generation of Senegalese music. She is making her way, with her vision of music, her way of making music, of playing music. So, I think there is still a long way to go. "Viviane returns to her first love, variety."
Still according to Michael Soumah, "Viviane started her career making pop music. We know that pop music is a very important school. Then, she tried her hand at mbalax music. There, we see that she is returning to her first love, pop. She tries to offer the public music that could be listened to by all ears. A mix between mbalax and different styles of pop music. And I think that's something that works very well at the moment. In my opinion, the musical style that Viviane is currently offering can take Senegalese music on a journey. The queen of the Jolof band has remained consistent in her career as a musician. I think she has left her mark on minds, she has left her mark on hearts. Today, she is a singer who is here, who is leaving her mark on Senegalese music."
"Mia Guissé has every interest in getting closer to Viviane"
Mia Guissé, as I was saying earlier, is a singer who is making her way. It's true that she is adored by young people. She has a young audience that is very interested in her music. But I think it would be in her best interest to get closer to Viviane to benefit from her advice, her experience, and to be able to carve out a good career for herself as a singer-artist. Because I think that when it comes to music, you have to think about career and not success. Success is very fleeting. I think you need a career plan, to work on your career. And that's what Viviane did. As a result, she remained consistent in her career as a singer-artist.
