Mame Dabakh : Un héritage de sagesse et de cohésion toujours vivant
Known for his unique voice that marked the nights of homage to the Prophet (PBUH), Serigne Abdou Aziz Sy Dabakh, an emblematic figure of wisdom, consensus and national cohesion, whose messages still resonate today, remains above all in the memories as a man of consensus and a guide above divisions.
Every year, the Mawlid Al-Naby rekindles the memory of this exceptional man of God. And more than two decades after his recall to God, his presence continues to inhabit hearts through his moral exemplarity, his spiritual depth, and his role as the ultimate sage, capable of advising, alerting, and, if necessary, imposing measures to preserve the unity of Senegal.
The third general caliph of the Tidianes, Mame Abdou embodied national cohesion and consensus for forty years, essential foundations of the country's stability. The Islamic Ummah describes him as a "leading intellectual and mediating figure," known for his calls for national unity and inter-confraternity dialogue.
His sermons and messages remain relevant today, still guiding political leaders and society, especially when national harmony is threatened. Mame Abdou intervened whenever Senegal experienced crises. This was the case during the blank year of 1988 caused by the student strike, or after the assassination of Judge Babacar Sèye in 1993, where he challenged consciences. A true "dove" in the face of political "hawks," he embodied pacifism and truth.
His conciliatory spirit was recognized by his illustrious father El Hadj Malick Sy (Maodo), who said of him: "Abdou yombana Jubool" ("it is easy to get along with him"). A champion of inter-brotherhood and interreligious dialogue, he remains a timeless reference.
In 2024, Senegal celebrated the centenary of his birth, recalling once again the indelible mark left by this man of God, a symbol of peace and cohesion.
