Mort de l’étudiant Abdoulaye Ba : Guy Marius Sagna met en cause la gestion sécuritaire de l’État
The death of student Abdoulaye Ba during student demonstrations at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar has reignited the debate on methods of maintaining order and the responsibility of the defense and security forces (FDS).
In a statement released on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, Member of Parliament Guy Marius Sagna condemned what he called "serious abuses" in the state's security management. "It is unacceptable for a citizen to be murdered in the course of maintaining order," he declared, stating that he condemned "the murder of student Abdoulaye Ba" as well as "the violence perpetrated by the defense and security forces, which stemmed more from hatred and cruelty than from maintaining order."
For the parliamentarian, the student's death is not an isolated incident, but a symptom of a security apparatus that has remained unchanged despite the rise to power of Pastef, which advocated a break with the past. "What has been done since April 2024 to transform and change the training of defense and security forces personnel with the aim of decolonizing it?" he asks.
Mr. Sagna warns against the repetition of such tragedies if no fundamental reforms are undertaken. "If we use the security forces apparatus that we found on the ground without changing it, without reforming it, without revolutionizing it to put it at the service of the people, we will have more Abdoulaye Bas," he warns.
GMS also calls on the government regarding the cases of victims of past violence. "What is the status of the cases of those who were murdered before April 2024?", he asks, arguing that the lack of truth and justice creates a climate of impunity.
"By not shedding light and revealing the truth about these cases, the government is continuing down the same path: giving a license to kill to certain agents of the defense and security forces," he accuses.
In this regard, he called for immediate and concrete measures. "The death of student Abdoulaye Ba must be investigated. The students must be freed. The state must take care of all injured students," he demanded, while acknowledging that appeasement also requires dialogue.
"We must continue the dialogue with student representatives," he said, also calling on them to review their mobilization strategies.
