De la promesse du Christ à la naissance de l'Église : Le pasteur Mignane Ndour nous dit tout sur la Pentecôte
Celebrated fifty days after Easter, Pentecost holds a central place in the Christian faith. Inherited from a Jewish harvest festival, it marks for Christians the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and the birth of the Church. In this interview, Pastor Mignane Ndour, Vice-President of the Assemblies of God of Senegal and Senior Pastor of the Temple of Nations Assembly in Baobabs (Rue 12), sheds light on its meaning, biblical foundations, and implications for believers today.
What is Pentecost?
Pentecost marks a key moment for Christians: the moment when Jesus' disciples receive the Holy Spirit, considered a spiritual power promised by Jesus. This event is also seen as the birth of the Church.
Its origin is recounted in the book of Acts of the Apostles, chapter 2, verse 1. "The disciples were gathered together in prayer awaiting the promise of Jesus."
Why is this holiday important for Christians?
It is important because it marks the official birth of the Church.
It was from this moment that the apostles began to proclaim the Christian message, and many people converted, forming the first communities of believers.
What is the role of the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is presented as a spiritual presence that accompanies believers in their life of faith.
He guides, teaches, and helps Christians to live out their commitment.
In Acts 1:8, Jesus promises: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses…”
Without this presence, it would be difficult for man to believe and to fully live his faith.
Why is Pentecost celebrated 50 days after Easter?
This is part of the calendar of major biblical festivals.
Pentecost comes fifty days after Passover. The word comes from the Greek Pentêkostê, which means “fiftieth”.
How is this holiday celebrated in Senegal within the Christian community?
In some churches, Pentecost is primarily a time for prayer and commemoration.
But it should not be reduced to a single day. Above all, it reminds believers how to live their faith on a daily basis.
What symbols are associated with Pentecost?
According to the biblical account in Acts 2, several signs appeared: a loud noise, tongues of fire, and speaking in different tongues.
These elements symbolize the power and presence of the Holy Spirit.
He also recalls the words of John the Baptist: "I baptize you with water, but he who is coming will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire."
How can we convey the meaning of Pentecost to younger generations?
Transmission occurs through teaching and practice.
We must teach the Word of God, but also show by example what it means to live with the Holy Spirit on a daily basis.
What message for the faithful on this occasion?
We should not wait for Pentecost to talk about the Holy Spirit.
It must be lived every day, in personal, professional and spiritual life.
The Bible recalls Jesus' promise about the comforter in John 14:16, and that the Holy Spirit is that constant companion.
Pentecost should also remind us of the values of peace, solidarity and national unity.
