The Diocese of Ziguinchor has been hosting the conclave of the Conference of Major Superiors, representing the religious congregations present in Senegal, since last Monday. This meeting precedes the celebration of the Jubilee launched by Pope Francis, in the presence of the Apostolic Nuncio.

Father Zachary Dione, president of the Conference of Major Superiors of Senegal, in an interview with the Catholic channel Religion Foi de Ziguinchor (RFZ), discussed the choice of this diocese and the themes addressed during this meeting, this conclave.

"During this session, we try to discuss current issues and our commitments. When we talk about religious men and women, they are involved in healthcare, education, and women's empowerment. We reviewed all these committees and tried to see what we can do to improve things for next year. And at the end of this general assembly, we have what is called the Jubilee. You know that the Jubilee was opened last December by Pope Francis. And this Jubilee will end on the Feast of the Epiphany, January 6, 2026."

"During this jubilee, it was requested that consecrated persons should also celebrate their jubilee in Rome and at the local level. And we thought of celebrating it in Ziguinchor, under the theme "Pilgrims of hope on the path of peace," explained Father Dione.

A way to rejoice in all that has been done to consolidate peace in Casamance and to give thanks to God.

"First and foremost, we give thanks to God for all the efforts of men and women, Muslims, Christians, and animists, who worked, listened to one another, and engaged in dialogue to bring peace to Casamance. We must continue to pray that this peace will be further consolidated here in Casamance, in Senegal, and also in the regions and countries surrounding us. Because without peace, we can do nothing," declared the president of the Conference of Major Superiors of Senegal.

Father Zachary also invited young people to educate themselves, to seek knowledge about the environment, ecology, education, finance, and above all to turn their backs on illegal emigration.

For the jubilee activities, reforestation is planned, as well as a moment of reflection at the "Le Joola" memorial museum.
