[En route pour la CAN] Découverte - Marché Médina de Casablanca : Un air de Sandaga en plein cœur de la métropole

Just steps from Casablanca's main thoroughfares, a unique atmosphere surprises Senegalese visitors. Here, the colors, smells, and voices instantly evoke Sandaga, the famous market in downtown Dakar. Welcome to Casablanca's Senegalese market, a place that has become essential for Sub-Saharan Africans living in Morocco, and especially for the Senegalese community.

This market is first and foremost a place for reunions and economic survival. A wide variety of food products, directly imported from sub-Saharan Africa, can be found here: local rice, palm oil, dried fish, spices, condiments, and other essential ingredients for traditional cuisine. The stalls overflow with familiar goods, while the aroma of freshly brewed Touba coffee wafts through the air, attracting both curious onlookers and regulars.

More than just a place of commerce, the Senegalese market in Casablanca is a true cultural crossroads. Traditional dishes are offered, recreating a taste of "home" for those living far from their country. Conversations take place in Wolof, in a lively atmosphere reminiscent of the bustling aisles of Sandaga.

Around the shops, other businesses thrive. African hair salons welcome men and women, offering braids, cuts, and traditional hair treatments. This is where the majority of Senegalese people involved in commerce have set up their shops, making this area a structured community economic hub.

Buyers and traders alike benefit. The former gain access to products that are rare elsewhere in Morocco, while the latter are able to meet their needs thanks to a loyal and supportive clientele.

The Senegalese market in Casablanca thus embodies a form of resilience and adaptation, where cultural identity is maintained despite exile.

In this part of town, Casablanca sometimes fades into the background, giving way to Dakar. For the duration of a stroll, you're no longer in Morocco, but rather in Sandaga.

A few weeks before the start of the Africa Cup of Nations Morocco-2025, Seneweb took a tour of the venues.
