The standoff between the National Waste Management Company (SONAGED) and its employees assigned to the General Directorate of Urban Planning and Architecture (DGUA) has reached a new level. In a letter addressed to the prefect of the Dakar department, the group of 31 unpaid workers announced the organization of a sit-in planned for Friday, September 12, 2025, in front of the SONAGED offices, located in the Cité Keur Gorgui. The sit-in planned in Keur Gorgui aims to put pressure on SONAGED and publicly demand their rights.

In their statement to the prefect, the officers requested that their gathering be supervised and secured by law enforcement. They also warned that other, more radical actions, such as peaceful marches or hunger strikes, could follow if no progress is made. These officers, recruited in March 2022 as part of the presidential program "XËYU NDAW ÑI," now have 14 months of salary arrears. Indeed, since July 2024, their salaries have not been paid, despite the renewal of their fixed-term contracts (CDD) in March 2024. The situation, described as "untenable," has plunged several families into extreme poverty. Among other things, the officers cite: "debts, children's school dropouts, and psychological distress."

Furthermore, these workers point out that their salaries were initially covered by SONAGED, before being suspended without a clear explanation. They accuse the company's senior management of "ignoring their multiple requests, even though a budget was available." Conversely, they welcome the willingness to engage in dialogue of the Director General of the DGUA, who benefits from their technical services.

Faced with this impasse, the agents are calling on the Minister of Urban Planning, Moussa Bala Fofana, and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko to find a rapid solution. They are demanding not only the immediate payment of their arrears, but also the effective renewal of their contracts.
