Affaire Arcelor Mittal : « Il s’est peut-être passé des choses derrières les rideaux »
More than a decade later, the Arcelor Mittal vs. Senegal case is still making headlines. The controversial case was reopened a few weeks ago, and two dignitaries of the former regime (Aly Ngouille Ndiaye and Birima Mangara) directly involved were heard. The facts reveal a compromise reached between the state and Arcelor Mittal that defies all logic, while the extractive company was required to pay a substantial sum to repair the damage caused to Senegal.
A situation that the State would benefit from clarifying, according to lawyer Pape Djibril Kanté, who welcomed the reopening of the case on the set of the Objection program this Sunday on Sud FM.
Returning to the facts, he recalls: "The Arcelor Mittal affair has been going on since Wade's time. He was supposed to make major investments, particularly with the mineral train that was supposed to leave Falémé for the mineral port of Bargny. We signed a contract and it turns out that Arcelor did not respect its part of the contract and was condemned by the Paris arbitration court. Once we were entitled to claim compensation since we had suffered damages, many experts estimated the damages at more than 2,000 billion CFA francs."
He adds: "I am surprised to see that in the end we ended up with 100 billion CFA francs." According to him, "there may have been things that happened behind the scenes." So, he concludes, "we have an interest in knowing what happened."
