Arnaque à la Oumra : rêves brisés à l’aéroport, 34 pèlerins floués
S. Kane, head of a travel agency, faces a year in prison. Tried by the Dakar court for flagrant offenses, he is accused of defrauding 34 candidates for the Umrah pilgrimage.
Lured by promotional offers circulating on social media, the victims had paid significant sums for their tickets and travel arrangements. However, on the day of departure, they were stunned at the airport: the airlines informed the pilgrims that their unconfirmed reservations had been simply cancelled.
His lawyers tried to exonerate their client by pointing to the responsibility of his employer, a certain S. Diallo, currently on the run: "Our client was not aware of participating in a criminal enterprise," the defense argued.
Conversely, the plaintiffs, who include a lawyer, are claiming 50 million FCFA in damages. The prosecutor, deeming the facts serious, requested that the charges be reclassified as fraud and sought a two-year prison sentence, one year of which would be served, as well as a fine of one million FCFA.
The court will deliver its verdict on January 19, reports Le Soleil, which attended the hearing.
