AXE LINGUERE-MATAM : LE BILAN DE L’ACCIDENT S’ALOURDIT
The tragic death toll from the road accident that occurred in the Linguère department last Sunday, near the town of Barkédji, has unfortunately risen. This increase comes with the death of a passenger who was being treated in the intensive care unit of the Ourossogui Regional Hospital in the Matam region. The number of fatalities linked to this fatal accident – caused by the overturning of a minibus traveling from Dakar to Matam – has thus officially increased from 7 to 8.
The grim toll now stands at two men, a child, and five women who have lost their lives. This latest tragedy on the Linguère-Matam road has plunged the town of Ourossogui into deep mourning. Among the victims were four women from the town, returning from a ziarra (religious pilgrimage), who perished in the accident. Their return, meant to be a time of devotion and peace, turned into an absolute nightmare for their families and the entire community.
This is yet another road tragedy that has alarmed and dismayed the local population, who are no longer hiding their dismay and exasperation. This collective emotion stems from the numerous recurring deaths resulting from accidents on this stretch of road, which sadly and consistently ranks among the most dangerous in Senegal. The causes of this danger are multifaceted: the often poor condition of the road surface, risky behaviors such as excessive speed and dangerous overtaking, the age of some public transport vehicles, and sometimes driver fatigue on long journeys. This fatal accident serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for concrete and effective road safety measures on this vital artery for the region.
