Baie de Hann : La recherche scientifique, clé de la dépollution et de la préservation durable, selon Baba Dramé
During a cleanup operation organized this Saturday, August 23, 2025, following the strong swells that hit the riverside neighborhoods of Hann Bay, causing the collapse of houses and the massive dumping of waste on the beaches, Baba Dramé, Director of Environmental Regulation and Control at the Ministry of the Environment and Ecological Transition (METE), emphasized the crucial role of scientific research in the decontamination and sustainable preservation of this ecosystem. Faced with persistent plastic pollution, the bay requires evidence-based solutions. “Scientific research plays an extremely important role. The plastic pollution we are observing is only the tip of the iceberg,” said Mr. Dramé.
He warned of the dangers of microplastics, which are invading the bay: "These particles, resulting from the degradation of plastic waste, can be ingested by fish and end up in the human food chain, with harmful effects on health."
Baba Dramé also indicated that characterization work is underway to assess the extent and nature of this pollution, as well as the chemicals affecting the marine ecosystem. "The results of this research will help guide public policies capable of reducing, or even stemming, the pollution of Hann Bay," he said.
