Bargny : 108 migrants interceptés par la police dans une tentative de voyage vers l'Espagne
A large-scale anti-illegal immigration operation took place in Bargny, on the beach of "Sococim Minam," where 108 people were intercepted while attempting to reach Spain by sea. This operation, carried out jointly by the National Division for the Fight against Migrant Trafficking (DNLT) and the Bargny police's River and Maritime Brigade, once again illustrates the scale of the phenomenon of irregular immigration in Senegal.
An intelligence-driven operation
The police intervention followed specific information regarding the imminent departure of a canoe bound for the Canary Islands. This information enabled the authorities to deploy a coordinated operation that proved particularly effective.
The operation took place in two distinct phases: 78 migrants were directly arrested on the boat, while the Bargny police station intercepted 31 other people involved in the same clandestine travel plan.
A heterogeneous group of candidates for emigration
The intercepted migrants present a diversity of nationalities revealing the attraction exerted by the Atlantic migratory route on West African populations:
- 75 Senegalese
- 31 Guineans
- 2 Malians
- 1 Nigerien
Investigations revealed that the migrants had paid between 300,000 and 600,000 CFA francs for this journey into the unknown.
The conditions of the journey also reveal the dangers to which these migrants are exposed. According to their statements, they spent two days aboard the canoe, awaiting a departure that was continually postponed due to a fuel supply problem.
Tensions that facilitate arrest
The prolonged wait and precarious conditions led to disputes within the group, prompting some migrants to spontaneously leave the boat and head for shore. This partial defection facilitated the intervention of law enforcement, who were able to make arrests.
Dismantling of the network of organizers
In addition to intercepting the migrants, the operation led to the arrest of two suspected organizers. They are facing prosecution for criminal conspiracy, attempted migrant smuggling by sea, fraud, and endangering the lives of others.
The two suspects were taken into custody and the investigation continues to dismantle the entire network and identify possible accomplices.
