Barrage de Manantali : pourquoi des lâchers d'eau sont nécessaires
In an interview with the newspaper Le Soleil , Dr. Bakary Faty, Director of Water Resources Management, explained the reason for the water releases carried out at the Manantali dam by the Société d’exploitation de Manantali et de Félou (Semaf). The structure reached its maximum operating level following heavy rains in the upper Senegal River basin. These releases are therefore an essential safety measure to guarantee the balance and stability of the dam and avoid any risk of exceeding the retention volume.
The official reassured local residents that these releases should not cause major flooding, except in the event of exceptional rainfall downstream. The forecast flow at Bakel corresponds to a routine flood, similar to those observed in previous seasons.
In response to past floods, the government has implemented several preventive measures. Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has given instructions to strengthen coordination with member countries of the Senegal River Development Organization (OMVS). In addition, the Ministry of Hydraulics has undertaken embankment work, the deepening of ponds and backwaters in the river valley, and has conducted awareness-raising and prevention campaigns among the population. Regular press releases are also published to inform and alert residents about potential flood risks, thus helping to better protect people and their property.
