Campagne agricole 2025-2026 : Entre pluies prometteuses et vigilance sanitaire à Kédougou
The Kédougou region is progressing smoothly with the 2025-2026 agricultural season, marked by ongoing harvests and generally satisfactory rainfall. Despite some localized shortages and pockets of flooding, the outlook remains optimistic, according to weekly report no. 23 on monitoring the agricultural season, covering the period from October 23 to 29, 2025.
Overall, rainfall was above average.
Hydrometeorological records show that, compared to the seasonal average (1991-2020), the majority of rainfall stations recorded a significant surplus. The Médina Baffé station recorded the highest total, with 393.6 mm.
However, a deficit is observed in some areas, notably in Dakatély (-124.4 mm), Kédougou Météo, Fongolimbi and Salémata.
Seasonal forecasts confirm a normal to surplus trend for the entire region, a major asset for the success of harvest operations and planning for the next season.
Early wintering and localized flooding
The rainy season arrived early this year, in line with seasonal forecasts. However, flooding has been reported in the Saraya department, affecting approximately 149 hectares of cultivated land.
Despite these losses, the situation remains under control and no other major disruptions have been reported at this stage.
Harvests are underway in all areas
As of October 29th, the campaign enters its harvest and post-harvest phase. Fonio, maize, rice, sorghum, peanut and cotton crops are at different stages of maturity, drying or threshing, depending on the area and the sowing waves.
Technicians note good crop development thanks to close monitoring and favorable agro-climatic conditions. “Harvesting operations are proceeding normally and without major incidents. We remain vigilant during this harvest and post-harvest period to provide good support to producers,” emphasizes Sékou Baldé, head of the Kédougou Departmental Rural Development Service.
A return to calm in terms of plant health.
After several weeks marked by attacks of fall armyworms (FAW) on maize, the phytosanitary situation has stabilized throughout the region.
However, agents report the presence of rice blast disease in certain areas, notably at farm 1 in Kédougou and in the Sambagara valley (Afia Pont).
Agricultural services are calling for vigilance and recommending that phytosanitary controls and producer capacities be strengthened. “It is urgent to make Pyrical DP powder available to protect crops against fungal attacks,” the report states.
Overall, encouraging prospects
Despite some challenges related to flooding and isolated outbreaks of fall armyworm, the 2025-2026 agricultural campaign is generally looking promising in the Kédougou region.
