Campagne agricole 2025-2026 : pluies excédentaires, inondations localisées et vigilance face aux ravageurs à Kédougou

The 2025-2026 agricultural season continues in the Kédougou region under good auspices, despite some challenges related to flooding and pest attacks. Weekly monitoring report No. 14, covering the period from August 21 to 27, 2025, reveals rainfall levels generally above the seasonal norm (1991-2020).

Largely excess rainfall

With the exception of a few stations such as Kédougou Météo, Mako, Dakatély, Ethiolo, Sabodala and Khossanto, all measurement points show excess rainfall. The record goes to Médina Baffé, which recorded an excess of 332.8 mm on August 27.

Seasonal forecasts confirm normal to excess rainfall this year, a favorable factor for agricultural production compared to 2024.

Floods in Saraya Department

The heavy rains, however, were not without consequences. Several villages in the Saraya department—Saroudja, Guémédji, Wassangara, Satadougou, and Missirah Dantila—were affected by flooding, causing damage to approximately 50 hectares of corn, rice, and peanut crops. A census of those affected and the areas affected is still underway.

Crops in full development

The region is currently in its fourth wave of planting. Cereals and peanuts from the first waves are between the vegetative and generative stages of development. Cotton, meanwhile, is evolving between growth and vegetative development. Overall, crops are showing good momentum, thanks to favorable rainfall conditions.

Vigilance against armyworms

On the phytosanitary side, the report highlights the presence of fall armyworms (FAW) on certain plots in the region. A Plant Protection Unit (UPV), dispatched from Missirah (Tambacounda), has already treated 95 hectares, with the support of 60 liters of phytosanitary products (Sultan 480 EC) made available to producers.

However, agricultural services are calling for increased vigilance and awareness among stakeholders to prevent the pest from spreading further.

An encouraging campaign despite the challenges

With abundant rains, healthy crop growth, and rapid action to combat pest threats, the 2025-2026 agricultural season looks promising in the Kédougou region. Regional authorities are banking on proactive risk management to ensure a good harvest.
