Chanvre indien : la police démantèle un réseau insolite à Thiaroye Gare
Thanks to an anonymous tip, the Thiaroye police dismantled an Indian hemp trafficking network that was using coffee pushcarts as a cover. The operation led to the arrest of a street coffee vendor, I. Camara, and his delivery driver, A. Barry.
The sleuths, stationed near the Thiaroye Gare market, observed the suspicious behavior of Barry, a "thiak-thiak" delivery man, parked near a coffee pushcart. Upon searching his luggage, they discovered 1.4 kg of Indian hemp. Moments earlier, Barry had been returning from a suspicious delivery made to Keur Massar on behalf of Camara.
The two men were brought before the public prosecutor and appeared before the Pikine-Guédiawaye court. L'Observateur, which attended the hearing, reports that the 27-year-old coffee seller, who had already been convicted, admitted to the charges, admitting that he regularly obtained hemp from Diamniadio.
Quoted by the daily newspaper of the Future Media Group, Barry, 26, also a repeat offender, denied being aware of the nature of the cargo, claiming that he was just a simple delivery man paid 4,000 francs to transport his client.
The prosecution requested a two-year prison sentence for the former and an acquittal for the latter. The court followed these demands: Camara was convicted of offering and selling Indian hemp, while Barry was acquitted on the grounds of doubt, L'Observateur adds.
