Fondation “Sénégal solidaire” : Maimouna Bousso dénonce un risque d’opacité
The announced creation of the national foundation "Senegal in Solidarity" continues to generate reactions within the political class. MP Maïmouna Bousso expressed her reservations in a critical statement, pointing out inconsistencies and risks associated with this initiative.
From the outset, the parliamentarian framed the debate in these terms: "Is this the foundation of a First Lady or the planned birth of a system we fought against? That is the crux of the matter." She then returned to what she considers a lack of exemplary conduct at the highest levels of government in recent years: "For two years, the Senegalese people watched. Two long years without an image of unity, without a visible gesture of solidarity, not a handshake, not a hug, not a shared smile, not even a word exchanged in public."
In an unprecedented context marked by the official presence of two wives of the head of state, Maïmouna Bousso deplores the lack of strong public signs: "Two years of silence where an example should have been set, because for the first time, two co-wives are officially at the presidential palace."
Regarding the new foundation, she questions the consistency of the message conveyed: "And today, we are told of the creation of a national foundation called 'Senegal in Solidarity'. But what kind of solidarity are we talking about when those who are supposed to embody it show no sign of it?"
The MP, however, was keen to qualify her position, stating that she was not opposed to the principle of social engagement: "Let's be clear, I am not opposed to the president's wives engaging in service to the Senegalese people. Quite the contrary. But this engagement must be within a clear, transparent, and responsible republican framework, alongside existing institutions."
She particularly emphasizes the role of existing public structures, such as the ministries responsible for Family and Education. But it is above all the issue of transparency that crystallizes her concerns: "What we reject, however, is the establishment of parallel foundations, escaping public control, through which untraceable funds could pass, opening the door to lobbying, pressure, and influence, without any real obligation to be accountable."
Maïmouna Bousso calls for greater rigor in governance: “Senegal does not need opaque structures. Senegal needs transparency, consistency, and exemplary conduct. We fought against these practices yesterday. We cannot accept them today.”
