Collision mortelle sur la RN 1 : Un Gendarme tué, le chauffeur du camion citerne arrêté après sa fuite
A serious road accident occurred this Saturday, November 22nd, at around 4:30 PM on National Route 1, near the village of Touba Sam Sam, located between Koumpentoum and Maléme Niani. The incident involved a Malian tanker truck carrying diesel fuel and a Renault passenger vehicle (license plate AA 512QHF).
According to initial findings, the accident occurred when the private vehicle, which was travelling towards Dakar, collided head-on with the heavy goods vehicle.
Due to the force of the impact, the tanker truck driver lost control of his vehicle. The truck then veered violently off the road and came to rest in the shoulder, where a bushfire was burning.
A passenger in the private vehicle, Gendarme Baye Aly Thiam, serving with the motorcycle unit in Dakar, succumbed to his injuries. He died yesterday, Saturday, November 22, around 8 p.m., at the Tambacounda Regional Hospital.
The driver of the tanker truck, a Malian national named Saliou Traoré, fled immediately after the accident.
Despite an immediate search launched by law enforcement, the man could not initially be found. It was only around 11 a.m. on Sunday that officers from the Koumpentoum Highway Patrol managed to apprehend him.
The arrest took place near the Kédougou road bypass, at the entrance to Tambacounda. Saliou Traoré was taken to the gendarmerie unit for questioning. He is being prosecuted for manslaughter and hit-and-run following a traffic accident resulting in injuries.
