The fight against illegal timber trafficking is raging in Kolda, specifically in the Vélingara department. The Water and Forestry services, conducting regular patrols to monitor and protect forest resources, including timber, have succeeded in apprehending offenders and seizing various pieces of equipment intended for forest destruction.
Thus, the agents of the Water and Forestry sector of Vélingara, under the command of Captain Gote Dieng, have intensified their operations to control and track down illegal operators.
These actions, sometimes carried out with the assistance of the security and defense forces, resulted in the arrest of 154 people, 124 of whom were taken into custody at the Vélingara gendarmerie.
The material results of these operations are impressive: 141 motorized tricycles, 68 chainsaws, and 65 motorcycles. This equipment was generally acquired outside our borders by these timber traffickers.
This report also includes the seizure of 31 carts, as well as dozens of logs and various types of wooden planks. Despite these successes, Captain Dieng reminds everyone that "these are only battles won, not the war."
In Sinthiang Koundara, the commune capital, and in Vélingara commune, stocks are as far as the eye can see, especially large motorcycles and carts that are crumbling under the weight of age.
Furthermore, the agents face several major difficulties: insufficient staff to cover the vast territory, weak cooperation from the population and local communities, lack of vehicles for patrols and transport of seized timber, as well as the risk of attacks from illegal operators and traffickers who are often heavily armed.
“We are requesting more logistical support and reinforcements for our personnel,” pleaded Captain Dieng, emphasizing that the majority of those apprehended are foreign nationals, with neighboring Gambia serving as a haven for this international timber trafficking. Despite the numerous efforts and determination of the Forestry Service agents, Lieutenant Colonel Moussa Diémé, the regional Forestry Inspector for Kolda, called for increased resources and greater cooperation from the local population to curb both domestic and cross-border trafficking.
Senegal, which ratified the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in August 1977, must rigorously commit to adopting a transboundary environmental conservation policy to protect its forest resources and biodiversity. Another crucial factor is the need to legislate jointly with countries that share borders with Senegal in order to better counter the various tactics employed by those who threaten the forest.
