«Dodio Glow Skin» : La marée de demandeurs et la réalité crue des chiffres du chômage
Images of the massive crowd flooding social media are causing quite a stir. Indeed, early Monday morning, an indescribable throng descended upon the new premises of "Diodio Glow Skin." The company and its owner had posted a job advertisement on their TikTok page to celebrate the opening of their new building.
The store certainly didn't expect to be overwhelmed by an indescribable avalanche of job seekers. The owner was forced to postpone the initiative and redirect applicants to submitting their applications online. A comical situation for some, disconcerting for others. But, in any case, it brings back to the forefront the persistent problem of unemployment, whose figures have skyrocketed.
For example, in 2022, two years before the end of Macky Sall's last term, the broad unemployment rate peaked at 26.2% in the first quarter of the year, according to the ANSD (National Agency for Statistics and Demography). A year later, although still high, it briefly dipped to 21.5%, then to 18.6% in March 2023. The rate then resumed its upward trajectory, climbing to 23.2% in the first quarter of 2024. In March 2025, a year after the start of the Pastef (Party of the Algerian Unemployment and Solidarity) administration, the broad unemployment rate stood at 21.7%.
Most government officials cite youth training as the reason for unemployment. However, despite hundreds of billions spent on vocational and technical training, "enrollment growth has slowed to 7.41%, and the number of young people enrolled in training programs is below established targets," notes the Budget Programming Document (DPBEP 2026-2028). Worse still, the pass rate for professional exams is 68.62%, five points below the target, it reports. Other economic factors must also be considered.
Last January, a similar situation sparked debate in Sacré-Cœur, specifically at the Reception, Guidance, and Support Office (BAOS). The premises were besieged by hundreds of young people applying for jobs. This time, they were seeking employment as seasonal agricultural workers destined for Spain. These two situations should bring the thorny issue of unemployment in Senegal back to the forefront of discussions.
