Drame à l’UCAD : Sen_CADDHU, Forum du justiciable et Justice sans frontières réclament la vérité
The African Convergence for Democracy and Human Rights (Sen_CADDHU), the Forum of the Justiciable and Justice Without Borders published a joint statement to express "their deep indignation at the abuses and excessive use of force against students of Cheikh Anta Diop University, which resulted in numerous injuries and the tragic death of student Abdoulaye Ba".
Senghane Senghor, Babacar Ba, and El Amath Thiam believe that this disproportionate use of force by the police is all the more alarming given that, according to them, there was no demonstration and therefore no order to maintain. They describe these acts as intolerable and constituting serious human rights violations, demanding justice and the truth so that the circumstances of this tragedy are fully investigated.
However, the organizations indicate that they have been informed of the arrest of several dozen students, including presidents of student associations as well as injured people, currently being held at the Central Police Station for reasons that remain unknown at this stage, despite the efforts noted on the part of the lawyers involved.
They call on the relevant authorities to avoid escalation and to take responsibility so that such tragedies do not happen again. They reiterate that the protection of students and respect for their rights must be an absolute priority, emphasizing that repression cannot replace dialogue.
Therefore, Sen_CADDHU, the Justice Forum, and Justice Without Borders strongly condemn the violence used by law enforcement against innocent students, demand the immediate opening of an independent, impartial, and transparent investigation to establish responsibility, and the publication of its findings as soon as possible. They remind the political, administrative, and judicial authorities of their obligations under Senegal's international commitments, particularly regarding respect for the right to life and dignity. Furthermore, they urge the authorities to foster peace by immediately releasing all those detained in this case and engaging in discussions with the students' legal representatives. They encourage the students to accept the opening of negotiations to forge strong consensus for lasting peace in Senegal's higher education institutions and call on all social and institutional actors to work towards a lasting solution that guarantees the stability of the academic year.
