The initial findings of the investigation into the fire that decimated the Dièye family in Columbus, Ohio, have raised profound questions. Not only does the tragedy appear to be arson, but the suspected perpetrator is Cheikh Dièye, 25, who was found dead alongside his parents in the flames.
Interviewed by L'Observateur, experts in criminology and psychology attempt to explain this extreme act. Criminologist Pape Khaly Niang points out that such acts never arise suddenly. According to him, the isolation associated with expatriation plays a major role: far from their social support network, a person's psychological vulnerabilities can worsen without anyone noticing. Daily pressure, when unsupported, creates fertile ground for a loss of control, especially when a form of emotional indifference sets in.
Psychologist Sandrine Diédhiou discusses the accumulation of unaddressed suffering and the emergence of distorted beliefs. She emphasizes that a person can end up wrongly perceiving their own family as the source of their distress. The extreme violence of the act—self-immolation and dragging loved ones into the flames—reveals a profound psychological complexity and a despair rarely visible to outsiders.
For psychologist Serigne Mor Mbaye, this tragedy must also be placed within the broader context of migrant families. Identity issues, common among the children of immigrants caught between two cultures, can weaken their personal development. When an acute crisis occurs in an already vulnerable individual, the tipping point can happen in complete silence.
All experts agree on one point: the act of violence often occurs under the guise of calm, without any obvious warning signs. Only a thorough psychological, social, and familial investigation will be able to shed light on Cheikh Dièye's exact motive.
In its Saturday edition, Les Échos reported that nearly twenty 911 calls had been recorded in three years for domestic disputes and disturbances, indicating an extremely tense family atmosphere among the Dièye family.

Les vrais experts sérieux vont sur place pour faire leurs recherches et enquêtes ou essayer au moins d’entrer en contact avec les enquêteurs américains en charge du dossier mais les paresseux vont se contenter de généraliser et de faire du copier coller pour marquer leur nom dans un article.
Ainsi va le Sénégal de nos jours avec sa pléthore d’autoproclamés experts, consultants, docteurs, professeurs, journalistes et chroniqueurs qui nous saoulent et nous pompent l’air à longueur de journée. Il va falloir nettoyer tout ce bordel et remettre de l’ordre pour assainir le monde médiatique.
