Environnement : L’ADES lance un appel pressant à l’action collective face à l’urgence climatiqu

On the occasion of World Environment Day, celebrated this Friday, June 5, 2026, the Alliance of Ecologists of Senegal (ADES) issued a strong official statement. Led by its president, Baye Salla Mar, the environmental organization is sounding the alarm about the unprecedented acceleration of global warming. Faced with a structural shortfall in international funding promised for adaptation in developing countries, ADES urges the national and international community to mobilize immediately and in solidarity, while demanding a review of financial mechanisms to avoid crippling the most vulnerable nations.

An alarming trajectory beyond the critical threshold of 1.5°C

World Environment Day, established in 1972 under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), remains the largest global platform for raising public awareness. For this 2026 edition, the Alliance for Sustainable Development (ADES) reminds us that human activities have led to a surge in greenhouse gas emissions, warming the climate at an unprecedented rate. The Alliance indicates that the world has already reached a temperature increase of 1.1°C. Without a global shift in action, projections predict an increase of between 2.4 and 2.6°C by the end of the century, a trajectory that would make it impossible to sustain the costs associated with extreme weather events and protect communities.

For Senegalese environmentalists, the warning signs from the Earth are no longer a distant threat but a clearly visible daily reality: record temperatures, violent forest fires, extreme storms, melting glaciers, rising sea levels, coastal erosion, and marine incursions. Faced with this situation, ADES insists that limiting warming to 1.5°C is an absolute necessity to avoid the worst catastrophes, especially as this critical threshold is about to be crossed.

The adaptation financing crisis and the debt trap

The core of ADES's appeal lies in the immense gap between the actual financial needs and the effective contributions of industrialized countries. The organization points out that the cost of financing the necessary adaptation for developing countries is estimated at $310 billion per year by 2035.

However, given current trends, international commitments are not being met. The press release emphasizes that the target set by the Glasgow Climate Pact—which aimed to double international public financing for adaptation by 2025 compared to 2019 levels—will not be achieved. Furthermore, the New Collective Target for Climate Finance is proving largely insufficient to close the funding gap.

Faced with this dual climate and financial crisis, the president of ADES, Baye Salla Mar, is issuing a solemn appeal for collective action. The Alliance is calling for a massive increase in public and private funding dedicated to adaptation. Above all, it is demanding climate justice: ensuring that these funds do not lead to an increase in debt instruments, so as not to further weaken the economies of vulnerable countries that are bearing the brunt of crises for which they are not responsible.
