Fausse loterie à Guédiawaye : une veuve dépouillée de son argent destiné à la Oumra
While attending condolences in Guédiawaye, A. Ndiaye, a 47-year-old widow, experienced a nightmarish day. On November 3, after getting off the bus at the Malibu roundabout, she was approached by a man touting a supposed promotion on household appliances, reports L'Observateur in its Saturday edition.
Under a tent set up nearby, a fake lottery was being held, offering envelopes with prizes ranging from 10,000 to 1,000,000 CFA francs. The widow initially bet the 42,000 CFA francs she had on her. After winning a refrigerator worth 50,000 CFA francs, her excitement grew, and she fell into the trap. Encouraged by the con artist and an accomplice, she then bet another 10,000 CFA francs, and then another 20,000 CFA francs, convinced she could win a big prize.
Encouraged to bet more, she called her daughter to transfer 400,000 CFA francs. Despite her doubts, her daughter eventually sent the money. Intoxicated by the gambling, the victim attempted another bet of 800,000 CFA francs, this time asking her son for money, to whom she ordered: "Don't argue, do as I say!" In total, A. Ndiaye lost 550,000 CFA francs, part of which was intended to finance her Umrah pilgrimage.
It was only on her way to her destination that she realized she had been scammed. Furious, she returned to the scene and chased after the con artist, A. Camara, aided by a taxi driver. An off-duty police officer, himself a victim of the same scam a few days earlier, intervened to arrest the suspect.
Taken to the central police station in Guédiawaye, A. Camara eventually confessed and returned the entire sum with the help of an accomplice. Charged with fraud, criminal conspiracy, and illegally operating a gambling establishment, he attempted to exonerate himself by claiming to be merely a driver.
But the prosecutor, quoted by the newspaper of the Groupe Futurs Médias (GFM), denounced the cruelty of a man who took advantage of a vulnerable woman in mourning. The Pikine-Guédiawaye Magistrates' Court ultimately sentenced him to two years in prison, one of which is a mandatory sentence, along with the full reimbursement of 550,000 CFA francs to the victim, the GFM headline added.
