Funeste confusion avec le chanteur: Abdou Makham Diarra tué à la place de Youssou Ndour en 1992
"You's lookalike has died." This was the headline of the article published in Le Soleil on August 4, 1992, announcing the death of Abdou Makham Diarra. The latter, mistaken for Youssou Ndour, was stabbed by Mbaye B. Thiam, who wanted to kill the singer.
What a terrible confusion that was committed against the unfortunate Abdou Makham Diarra! On Friday, July 3, Mbaye Binta Thiam, armed with two knives and consumed by a tenacious hatred, pushed open the door of the Saprom production company, located in Castors. He was looking for the owner of the place and lead vocalist of Super Etoile de Dakar, Youssou Ndour, to kill him. Unfortunately, on the path of his murderous fury, he came across Abdou Makham Thiam (whom others called Bakhane) and unleashed himself on him. The man was stabbed several times, but drew on his last strength to take refuge in the toilets. Emergency services found him there and took him first to CTO and then to the Main Hospital of Dakar.
There he underwent a lengthy surgical procedure during which he nearly suffered a cardiac arrest four times. The assailant managed to leave the scene in the meantime and went directly to surrender himself to the Foire Gendarmerie Brigade. "I just killed Youssou Ndour," Mbaye B. Thiam declared bluntly to the astonished police. The assailant was first subjected to a barrage of questions from the gendarmes, who initially suspected it was a contracted act, before being brought before the prosecutor's office of the Dakar Regional Court on July 7. He finally succumbed to his injuries on Saturday, August 1. The autopsy revealed a liver abscess. The two journalists had visited Abdou Makham Diarra's home in Dieuppeul the day before his death. They reported finding the injured man in a pitiful state that prevented him from answering their questions.
The victim, Abdou Makham, alias You No2, a die-hard fan of Youssou Ndour, was a regular at the Saprom production company. Born on March 11, 1967, he was 25 years old when he suffered this fatal attack. At the time of the incident, Youssou Ndour was on an international tour with the Super Etoile de Dakar. He was in Norway the day his lookalike died. A year ago, speaking to the late DJ Nicolas Diop on Sud FM, Youssou Ndour spoke of this incident as the one that shocked him the most in his career. "It found me in Germany, on tour. I was so affected that I thought about quitting music," the singer-songwriter reacted.
