Grosse arnaque : les «multiplies» conversions à l’islam rapportent à Jérôme de l’argent et... de gros ennuis
A plumber named Jérôme, originally from Guinea-Bissau, was arrested and brought before the prosecutor by the Diamaguène-Sicap Mbao police last Wednesday. He can consider himself lucky, however, as he likely escaped a much worse fate. L'Observateur reports that the police saved him from a group of young men who wanted to lynch him as he walked through the streets of Wakhinane 4.
When they rushed at him, shouting that he was a fraud, the newspaper reports, he took refuge in the house of the neighborhood imam while waiting for the arrival of law enforcement.
What is Jérôme accused of? The daily newspaper of the Future Media Group reports that he went around the neighborhoods proclaiming a conversion to Islam which he kept renewing just to raise money from Muslims, counting on their solidarity.
According to the count from the same source, the alleged scammer struck in mosques in five different neighborhoods: first in Hamdallaye 4, then in Pikine Rue 10, then in Fass Mbao and in Sacré Cœur before Colobane.
The Observer details his modus operandi: “Jérôme shows up, usually on Fridays, the day of the main weekly prayer which brings together a crowd of worshippers. Each time, before the imam takes his place on the pulpit to read his sermon, he approaches the mosque officials and whispers in their ear that he wants to convert to Islam. A trick that works every time: the crowd of worshippers, moved by the imam's words to him, rush to congratulate him before giving him money.”
One detail ruined his plans: his exploits were being filmed and posted on social media. The viral nature of the conversion ceremonies led to his downfall last Wednesday when young people recognized him in the streets of Wakhinane 4.
