Khalifa Ababacar Sy, a 36-year-old worker, died on Wednesday after falling from the third floor of a building under construction at Limamoulaye High School in Guédiawaye.
The accident occurred as he was descending from scaffolding without a safety harness: the six workers present had only two belts. While attempting to climb down through a window, he slipped and fell violently, L'Observateur reported in its Friday, August 29, edition.
Seriously injured, he died during his evacuation to the Main Hospital in Dakar.
This tragedy has sparked anger and indignation among his family, who denounce the deplorable safety conditions on the construction site. The prosecutor's office has ordered an investigation, and an autopsy is pending, the same source emphasizes. The source also notes that this is not the first incident on the site, as accidents have occurred several times since construction began two years ago.
The school principal, Aliou Diallo, quoted by the daily newspaper of the Future Media Group, confirmed the accident while specifying that the construction site is the responsibility of the Ministry of Vocational Training and not the school administration.
The project, awarded to the Kelimane company for approximately 12 billion CFA francs, is also at the heart of a legal controversy. In February 2024, the Supreme Court annulled the provisional award of the contract for failure to comply with transparency rules. Despite this decision, work continued with the same contractor, fueling criticism and suspicion.
As delays mount and working conditions on the construction site are criticized, Khalifa Ababacar Sy's death has reignited the debate over worker safety on major public construction sites. His family is demanding truth and justice, L'Observateur adds.

Ah bon
12 milliards???
