Guerre en Ukraine : effectif, morts, prime, salaire…, tout sur les Sénégalais qui combattent pour la Russie
A report by the organization Inpact, in collaboration with the "Khachu Zhit/I want to live" project, reports that 1,416 Africans of 35 nationalities are fighting for Russia against Ukraine. Among them, according to L'Observateur, which consulted the document, are 14 Senegalese. Six have died in combat. According to the same source, they are Ngouda G. (37 years old), Malick D. (25 years old), Matar D. (36 years old), Libasse D. (35 years old), Baba N. (25 years old), and Fallou F. (31 years old).
The report also reveals the conditions under which candidates are recruited: upon signing the contract, the recruit receives a bonus of up to $30,000 (16 million CFA francs). She is also entitled to a monthly salary of between $2,200 and $2,500 (over 1 million CFA francs), health insurance, and, after an expedited process lasting three to six months, is granted Russian citizenship.
The offer seems tempting, but often, the report's authors point out, the promises are not kept. For example: "For many, the Russian passport will not materialize."
What about military training? It "amounts to a few weeks, when it is not simply non-existent," L'Observateur reports. "Deployment to combat zones is almost immediate," the report points out.
Inpact and the "Khachu Zhit/I want to live" project indicate that Russia's future African soldiers are recruited through "perfectly oiled transnational networks, mixing travel agencies, targeted online advertising, local intermediaries and already enlisted recruits who in turn become agents of influence."
But alongside the volunteers attracted by these circuits, another category of African candidates are joining the ranks of the Russian army: "the investigation documents numerous cases of African recruits who came to study or work in Russia and who, due to lack of resources or under pressure, find themselves forced to sign a military commitment."
