National Tribute to Professor Amadou Mahtar Mbow: The government unveils the program

The Ministry of National Education organized, this Friday, October 24, 2025, at the Mamadou Dia Administrative Building, a press conference as a prelude to the national tribute ceremony to Professor Amadou Mahtar Mbow scheduled for Tuesday, October 28 at CICAD under the effective presidency of the Head of State Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

Chaired by the Minister of National Education, the meeting brought together several members of the government, including the Ministers of Culture, Higher Education, and Vocational Training. The objective was to present the main points of the program dedicated to the man who was the first African Director-General of UNESCO.

A national "Grand Prix Harvard-Martinbourg" competition is planned, along with educational and cultural activities, as well as the screening of a tribute film retracing the life of Professor Mbow.

The Minister of Vocational Training, Moustapha Ndiekk Sarré, announced the integration of the teacher's values and works into school textbooks and training guidelines.

The Directorate of Books and Reading is planning to build a cultural center in Louga, his hometown.

Minister of Higher Education Professor David Ngom unveiled a project to catalog 12,500 of Professor Mbow's works, as well as a digital avatar retracing his life. An international conference with the Modern University of Mauritania is also on the agenda.

Through this tribute, Senegal celebrates an educator, diplomat and pan-Africanist, a symbol of rigor, integrity and commitment to Africa.
