Inondations à Saint-Louis : Cheikh Tidiane Dièye au chevet des sinistrés et en quête de solutions durables

The Minister of Hydraulics and Sanitation, Cheikh Tidiane Dièye, carried out a field visit to Saint-Louis on Thursday to assess the extent of the flooding following the heavy rains that have hit the old town in recent days.

Accompanied by local authorities, technical service directors, ONAS, DPG, firefighters, and local government officials, the minister toured several affected neighborhoods, including Pikine, Tableau Walo, Diaminaar, and Médine. The objective was twofold: to provide support to the affected populations and to discuss emergency solutions while considering structural and sustainable responses.

"We had to be there for the residents, talk to them, and provide them with some initial relief. But beyond the emergency, we must put in place structural solutions so that Saint-Louis and other cities don't have to live in these situations forever," Cheikh Tidiane Dièye told the press.

The minister recalled that the Senegalese government has included flood control in its sectoral policy letter, with a ten-year plan and a sanitation master plan that will extend until 2050. However, he insisted on the need for "nature-based solutions" and urban reorganization, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas where rehousing will be inevitable.

In the short term, pumping and drainage systems have already been deployed to release stagnant water and facilitate traffic flow in the neighborhoods. The minister praised the "civic and patriotic mobilization" of residents, who spontaneously contributed to the efforts to clear roads and drain homes.

The tour ended in Bango, where Cheikh Tidiane Dièye observed the progress of work on a strategic dike. This structure, currently being finalized, plays a key role in securing agricultural activities, improving access to drinking water, and reducing flood risks.

"This project illustrates what we want: infrastructure that, beyond responding to flooding, brings lasting benefits to populations," the minister stressed.

With weather forecasts predicting further heavy rain by the weekend, local and national authorities intend to maintain vigilance and accelerate the implementation of promised structural solutions.

On vous a dit que vos techniciens vous mentent mais vous continuez à chercher avec eux des solutions durables?!!
Je vois venir des projets gouffre à milliards sans résoudre le problème, car le système est ainsi fait : mêmes têtes, mêmes résultats.
