Italie : un hôpital condamné à payer environ 1 milliard F CFA à la famille d’un enfant sénégalais de 6 ans mort à cause de…
A healthcare facility in Catania, Sicily (Italy), has been found responsible for the death of a six-year-old Senegalese child shortly after he was admitted to its care in June 2019. After being found guilty and ordered to pay €1.5 million (975 million CFA francs) to the child's family in the first instance, the facility saw the verdict upheld on appeal. "The medical examinations conducted during the trial revealed serious diagnostic errors," reports Les Échos, which broke the story.
The newspaper continues: "The doctors reportedly failed to perform simple tests that would have detected diabetic ketoacidosis, a serious complication, but one that is generally treatable if identified early. Experts estimated that the child's chances of survival would have been greater than 99% with proper care."
The victim had been admitted to the hospital emergency room for "severe abdominal pain and vomiting. After an examination deemed insufficient, he was sent home with a diagnosis of probable viral infection, without further testing," recounts Les Échos. His condition worsened a few hours later. Taken back to the hospital, the child received care, but only "limited" treatment, according to the newspaper. He ultimately died.
Considering that the healthcare facility was liable, the deceased's family filed a complaint. They won their case.
