« J’ai vraiment honte et... » : la confession d’une adjointe au maire de Saly Portudal
The Mbour High Court delivered its verdict this Tuesday, January 6, in the case involving elected officials from the municipality of Saly Portudal. Four municipal councilors, including three deputy mayors (P. Seck, B. Gueye, B. Dieng, and I. Djigal), were found guilty of violence that occurred during the setup of a fair in late December. They were sentenced to two months' imprisonment, suspended, and ordered to jointly pay 12 million CFA francs in damages to the organizer, D. Fall. The two other defendants, Nd. Fall and FD Sané, were given no sentence, reports L'Observateur.
The newspaper, which attended the hearing, reports that everything was orchestrated through a WhatsApp group. Confronted with the facts, First Deputy Mayor P. Seck expressed her regret: "I am truly ashamed and I apologize to the court and the plaintiff." Second Deputy Mayor B. Gueye also admitted to contributing to the inflaming tensions: "It was under the weight of anger that I acted this way."
The conflict, according to the newspaper Groupe Futurs Médias, stemmed from a power struggle between the city council and the fair organizer, who nevertheless held a permit from Sapco. This tension culminated on the night of December 23rd with the ransacking of 95 stands, resulting in damages of 9 million.
The public prosecutor, quoted by the same source, denounced the irresponsibility of the elected officials, accusing them of having "sent poor young people to the front" to settle by force a dispute which, according to him, "should have been dealt with administratively or judicially".
