A 13-year-old boy died on the night of Sunday, May 17, to Monday, May 18, 2026, after the slab of an abandoned house used as a daara (Koranic school) collapsed in the Unit 14 neighborhood of the Parcelles Assainies district of Jaxaay. Seven talibés (Koranic students) were sleeping in the building at the time of the tragedy. An investigation has been opened, and the prosecutor of Pikine-Guédiawaye has been informed of the incident.

Around 8:00 AM on Monday, May 18, 2026, the Jaxaay district police station was informed of the death of a young Koranic student during his transfer to the Keur Massar health center. The victim had been pulled, in critical condition, from the rubble of a building that had collapsed overnight, located in Unit 14 of the Parcelles Assainies neighborhood in Jaxaay. According to Seneweb sources, this abandoned house was used by Koranic teacher EBNiane as a daara (Koranic school) to house his students.

According to initial findings at the scene, seven talibés were sleeping in the living room of the dilapidated building when, around 1:00 a.m., the ceiling tile suddenly collapsed. The children were caught in their sleep. One of the talibés, seriously injured, was immediately taken to the Keur Massar health center, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The victim has been formally identified as P. Ndiaye, approximately 13 years old. This young talibé (student of a Koranic school) was living in the daara (Koranic school) with his companions at the time of the accident. A second child, M. Ka, was injured in the collapse. His injuries were deemed minor, and he was released after receiving treatment at Keur Massar Hospital.

EB Niane, the Koranic teacher in charge of the daara, was absent at the time of the tragedy. According to his brother, A. Niane, who was interviewed at the scene, El HBNiane was traveling in the Saloum region when the disaster occurred. Upon learning of the tragedy, he reportedly immediately set off for Dakar.

Public Prosecutor Saliou Dicko, head of the prosecutor's office at the High Court of Pikine-Guédiawaye, has been informed of the facts and is following the development of the case.
