« Je voulais vraiment en finir » : le candidat exclu du Bac raconte sa tentative de suicide
The tragedy had deeply moved public opinion: on June 27, Abdoulaye Faye, 23 years old and a candidate for the Baccalaureate, had attempted to end his life by inflicting serious injuries to his abdomen and throat, after having been excluded from the Baccalaureate exams for an administrative error linked to his birth certificate.
In an interview with L'Observateur, the young man, who miraculously survived, talks about his fight for recovery and is now looking to the future.
"I really wanted to end it."
Three months after his gesture, Abdoulaye Faye lucidly testifies to his despair, affirming that it was "in no way a cry for help" but a "real attempt to end it all."
"That day of June 27 will remain etched in my memory. It wasn't a cry for help, I really wanted to end it all. To this day, when I look at the images of the scene on the day of the events, I still can't believe that it was me who could have inflicted such an atrocity on myself," he confided, adding that he had experienced his exclusion as an "administrative injustice" that had led him to see only death.
Abdoulaye Faye says he's still struggling with his mental health. He suffered a relapse, confirmed by his father, in September, requiring psychiatric care at Mbour hospital and traditional treatments. With his birth certificate authenticated, he's now focusing on his studies:
"I plan to return to school to enroll and continue my studies" with the goal of "graduating with honors this year."
The source for the daily newspaper of the Future Media Group also called on the authorities to address issues related to civil status documents seriously, so as to no longer "mortgage a student's career."
