A. Diop, a fisherman from Joal, is in prison for assault and battery and violence against a parent. He was remanded in custody for beating his mother, Y. Sarr.
The incident occurred on Thursday night in the Santhie 3 neighborhood. Returning from the Joal fishing pier, A. Diop burst into his mother's room. He grabbed her leg, dragged her to the veranda, and punched her repeatedly.
The newspaper L'Observateur, which reported the story, notes that the house was empty at the time of the attack, as the other family members were away. The victim was rescued by neighbors, alerted by her cries, the newspaper reports.
Alerted, the gendarmerie arrested the fisherman. He initially denied the charges before confessing. According to L'Observateur, he claimed his mother neglected him since his father's death and subsequent remarriage. "All that matters to her are my half-brothers and half-sisters," A. Diop explained.
