A serious case of female genital mutilation has been uncovered in the village of Yacine Laké, Kanel department. Two women were brought before the Matam prosecutor's office on Monday, September 29, for having circumcised a baby over one month old.
Early pregnancy
The case begins with a romantic relationship between two students at Yacine Laké's CEM: A. Gangué, 18, and Aissata D., 17. Their repeated sexual relations resulted in a pregnancy that led the young girl to give birth on August 7, 2025, to a little girl named D. Gangué. Aissata, who lived with her grandmother CH Dia, found herself faced with a difficult situation aggravated by harmful traditions.
The organization of excision
More than a month after the birth, grandmother CH Dia recommended that her granddaughter have the baby circumcised. To carry out this practice, which is prohibited by law, she joined forces with her neighbor Coumba K. to hire a circumciser. On September 15, 2025, Mrs. H. Guissé, a circumciser living in Bokiladji, went to the village of Yacine Laké where she stayed with her cousin Coumba K. On her grandmother's instructions, young Aissata took her baby to the circumciser who performed the procedure before returning home.
Discovery and alert
A few days after the circumcision, Aissata went to the Bakel health district for a follow-up appointment. There, a midwife made the terrible discovery: the baby had been circumcised and was still bleeding. Alerted, the midwife immediately informed her superiors. Faced with the gravity of the situation, the health authorities urgently evacuated the little victim to the Ourossogui hospital for appropriate care.
The intervention of justice
The Kanel Open Environment Educational Action (AEMO), informed of the facts, sent an information note to the Matam prosecutor. The head of the prosecution was quick to react by ordering the commander of the Kanel territorial brigade to open an investigation, according to Seneweb sources. The investigation conducted by the gendarmes led to the identification and arrest of:
The two suspects were brought before the Matam prosecutor's office on Monday, September 29, where they will have to answer for their actions.
This case serves as a reminder that female genital mutilation remains a harmful practice and is prohibited by Senegalese law. Beyond violating children's rights, it exposes victims to serious medical complications, as evidenced by the persistent bleeding observed in the baby.
