Kédougou : Début du Ramadan dans la division, la Jama’atou Ibadou Rahmane entame le jeûne
Part of the Muslim community in Kédougou began fasting on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, marking the start of the blessed month of Ramadan. The decision was announced by the Jama'atou Ibadou Rahmane of the region, which stated that the crescent moon had been sighted in several locations around the world, including Senegal.
According to officials of this religious organization, consistent reports of moon sightings make it obligatory to begin fasting this Wednesday. The faithful affiliated with this movement thus observed the first day of Ramadan in an atmosphere of fervor and devotion.
However, as in previous years, there was no consensus on the start date of the holy month in the Kédougou region. Another segment of the Muslim community may begin fasting this Thursday, pending official confirmation of the sighting of the new moon. These worshippers have scheduled a meeting for Wednesday evening to observe the moon, in accordance with Islamic tradition.
This situation illustrates once again the diversity of approaches to determining the religious calendar, a recurring phenomenon in several localities of the country during Ramadan.
