Kédougou : La douane intercepte plus de 20 000 paquets de cigarettes de contrebande à Pondala
The fight against smuggling continues intensely in the Kédougou region. The Kédougou mobile customs brigade made a significant seizure of cigarettes in the town of Pondala on Thursday around 4 p.m., thus reinforcing the surveillance measures deployed on sensitive routes in the region.
According to information gathered on site, customs officers intercepted a convoy of five motorcycles transporting a large shipment of contraband cigarettes. The operation resulted in the seizure of 20,430 packs of cigarettes destined for the black market.
The motorcyclists attempted to flee. Two were apprehended by officers from the mobile brigade. The other suspects managed to escape, abandoning some of the illicit merchandise.
This latest seizure illustrates the increased vigilance of customs services in this border area, which is frequently plagued by illicit trafficking. For several months, customs authorities have been stepping up control operations to curb the fraudulent movement of prohibited or undeclared goods.
An investigation has been launched to identify the owners of the cargo and any networks involved in this trafficking. Those arrested are expected to be brought before the relevant authorities in the coming hours.
