In Keur Massar, a network of lithium battery and telecom cable thefts, to the detriment of Camusat, a Sonatel subcontractor, was dismantled. These thefts resulted in losses estimated at more than 700 million CFA francs and caused recurring network outages, reports L'Observateur.

According to the modus operandi described by the same source, the mastermind of the operation, Mr. Socé, a technician at Camusat, hid the equipment on technical sites to recover it at night and resell it on the parallel market. He had joined forces with Mr. Diop, also a technician, who acted as an intermediary with the receiver, Ch. A. Seck, a trader based in the Medina. The latter bought the batteries, whose unit value is 800,000 CFA francs, for only 100,000 each.

The network was dismantled thanks to an undercover operation by the Keur Massar Research Brigade, during which an agent ordered five batteries from Mr. Diop, details the daily newspaper of the Future Media Group.

During the deliberations delivered on October 22, the Pikine-Guédiawaye flagrante delicto court handed down prison sentences against the three defendants, despite their denials: Mr. Socé was sentenced to two years in prison, including six months in prison. Mr. Diop received a three-month prison sentence. Ch. A. Seck was sentenced to two months in prison.

The three convicted persons will also have to jointly pay 2.5 million, including 500,000 CFA francs to Sonatel and 2 million to Camusat, in damages.
