Kolda : Les femmes vivant avec un handicap dénoncent l'inaccessibilité des structures sanitaires
Access to healthcare remains a struggle for people living with disabilities in the Kolda region. Faced with both physical and human obstacles, the Association of Women and Girls Living with Disabilities has taken a stand to denounce shortcomings that it considers contrary to the most basic human rights.
Lack of access ramps, inadequate facilities, and nonexistent interior spaces: these are the major difficulties hindering the daily lives of women in the region. According to Aïssatou Doumbouya, president of the association, these structural deficiencies are widespread in Kolda's healthcare facilities. She solemnly calls on the authorities to renovate these facilities to guarantee dignified access for this vulnerable segment of the population.
Beyond the lack of infrastructure, Aïssatou Doumbouya points to the behavior of some security guards and watchmen at the entrance to healthcare facilities. According to her, they do nothing to make things easier for people with reduced mobility.
The most sensitive issue raised by members of the association concerns the requirement for them to wait in line just like able-bodied people. This situation is considered "virtually impossible" and experienced as a form of mistreatment. The association is calling for the implementation of genuine affirmative action, so that the vulnerability of these women is taken into account from the moment they arrive at healthcare facilities.
A call for the development of public spaces
The president of the regional federation for people with disabilities joined this appeal, calling for the direct intervention of administrative and health authorities. He believes that improving the living conditions of this group of citizens absolutely requires the systematic construction of access ramps, not only in hospitals, but also in all public places throughout the region.
This cry of distress from the women of Kolda reminds us of the urgent need to make the health system truly inclusive, in accordance with national commitments to people living with disabilities.
