La pêche artisanale africaine mise à l’honneur par la FAO

The African Confederation of Professional Artisanal Fisheries Organizations (CAOPA) has been recognized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for its commitment to sustainable aquatic food systems.

This recognition will be made official on October 15, 2025, during a ceremony organized at FAO headquarters in Rome, as part of the celebrations for the institution's 80th anniversary and the World Food Forum.

For the president of CAOPA, Gaoussou Gueye, this recognition "is an immense honor for all artisanal fishing communities in Africa."

It recognizes more than a decade of collective action in favor of sustainable fishing practices, the defense of the rights of coastal communities and the contribution of artisanal fisheries to food security on the continent.

Representing millions of small-scale fishers across Africa, CAOPA has established itself as a central player in international debates on marine resource sustainability and food sovereignty. The Rome ceremony, planned in a hybrid format, comes at a time marked by the challenges of climate change and the need to transform global food systems.
