L’AIBD franchit le cap historique des 20 millions de passagers
Blaise Diagne International Airport (AIBD) has reached a major milestone in its development by welcoming its 20 millionth passenger since it began operations on December 7, 2017. This symbolic event illustrates the growing importance of this strategic infrastructure in connecting Senegal with the rest of the world.
The honored passenger, Salmès Mouhammed Al-Bakar, a Mauritanian national, was traveling to Bordeaux. Warmly welcomed by airport authorities, she had a memorable experience. A bouquet of flowers and personalized assistance from a dedicated team for her and her young daughter: everything was done to make this moment truly special.
"I am very happy. This is a wonderful opportunity and I thank you immensely. The welcome was very warm. Everything is good at the airport," she said emotionally.
Growth despite the crises
Aşkın Demir, general manager of LAS SA, the airport operator, praised this performance.
"Since our opening in 2017, despite difficult periods such as the COVID-19 pandemic, we have managed to reach 20 million passengers. This success is not only that of LAS, but that of Senegal," he rejoiced.
He also discussed future prospects, with the ambition of reaching 40, or even 50 million passengers in the coming years. An investment plan of approximately €30 million is planned for 2026-2027 to improve services and increase the terminal's capacity, currently estimated at 5 million passengers per year.
Blaise Diagne International Airport (AIBD) continues to expand its network with the opening of new air routes. A connection to Montreal has been announced, a first for Dakar and the sub-region. Furthermore, Transavia has progressively increased its presence, rising from three to 17 weekly flights to France.
This dynamic is part of an overall strategy aimed at attracting more airlines and positioning the airport as a leading regional hub.
The ceremony was marked by the symbolic boarding of the 20 millionth passenger, a tour of the facilities, and a behind-the-scenes look at the airport. The event continued in a festive atmosphere with a musical performance by Salihou Jam and his band.
Reaching the milestone of 20 million passengers represents much more than just a number. It testifies to the central role of AIBD in the economic and tourism development of Senegal. Building on this success, the airport intends to continue its growth and strengthen its position on the international aviation stage.
