L'avenue Bourguiba transformée en champ de bataille par des mécaniciens en colère
Tensions escalated on Monday, February 16th, on Habib Bourguiba Avenue in Dakar. Mechanics located near the Biscuiterie district violently protested an eviction operation.
According to reports from the scene, the material damage is significant. A supervisory vehicle belonging to the Biscuiterie town hall was set on fire around 10:00 AM, while several trucks mobilized for the cleanup operation were pelted with stones. In addition to these clashes, two tricycles used for transporting goods were also destroyed.
Traffic was completely paralyzed on this strategic thoroughfare. Motorists and pedestrians were forced to use the adjacent streets of the Dieuppeul district to try to reach the section leading to the Front de Terre. According to our sources, intense chases broke out between law enforcement—including some plainclothes officers equipped with grenade launchers—and the demonstrators, most of whom were masked and armed with stones.
This sudden interruption of traffic on such a key artery caused huge traffic jams, impacting in turn several other major roads in the Senegalese capital.
