«Le frère de son mari la courtisait» : les bouleversantes révélations du père de Nogaye Thiam
Samba Thiam is the father of Nogaye Thiam. This woman was found dead in her room at her in-laws' house in Yoff. For 48 hours, no one knew she had died and that her one-year-old child was lying next to a corpse.
In an interview with Les Échos, Samba Thiam revealed that his daughter's marriage to Elimane Diao was a painful and controversial choice. This union, ultimately marred by tragedy, never received his blessing. And for good reason: his daughter was the girlfriend of her husband's brother.
“Nogaye was initially engaged to Lamine Diao, but his grandmother opposed the marriage,” the grieving father confided. “Lamine then married another woman from the family. Shortly after, Elimane, his brother, asked for Nogaye’s hand in marriage. I categorically refused. I finally agreed under family pressure. I didn’t agree at all.”
Samba Thiam points out that his stepson Oumar Diao's father is his maternal uncle and that Oumar's wife is his cousin. Despite these very close family ties, he was not reassured: "I told Nogaye that if she wasn't careful, she wouldn't find happiness there."
According to him, events quickly confirmed his fears. From the very beginning of the marriage, Nogaye lived in an oppressive atmosphere: “As soon as he arrived, Lamine started courting her again, sending her messages to meet her. Her husband eventually discovered these exchanges, and tensions between the brothers erupted. When I spoke to my uncle, Oumar Diao, about it, he simply told me that Lamine wasn't a good person.”
The difficulties piled up. After losing his job in Sabodala, Nogaye's husband tried to join the family business, but Lamine opposed it. Nogaye, already vulnerable, was under increasing pressure. "She kept telling me she was living a nightmare. Her mother-in-law, who also shares her name, caused her problems every day. She begged me to get her out of that house. She had three miscarriages there."
Samba Thiam claims he repeatedly tried to get her to leave the house. One day, he even went to the house to try and convince her to come back with him. Although she had already left with her belongings, her mother allegedly forced her to return, threatening to sever all ties with her if she didn't.
According to the father, even his daughter's husband once asked his own father to let Nogaye go back to her parents, acknowledging that her mother was "bad" to her. "Nogaye stayed with us until she was seven months pregnant, then her mother-in-law insisted and begged her to return to the marital home. But after she gave birth, no one in the family, neither her husband nor her in-laws, informed her parents of the child's birth."
“On the day of the baptism, nobody came. I wanted the wedding to stop, but once again, his mother vetoed it,” Samba Thiam concluded.
